Opening a Bank Account

You should open a German bank account directly following your arrival, since a number of German institutions, such as the Studentenwerk Gießen, your university and health insurance companies will need to debit payments from a German cheque account (das Girokonto).

There are many banks with branches in Gießen, Friedberg and Fulda. Some even offer free (no fees) cheque accounts for students, so do not forget to ask the corresponding banker.
