Registration with the authorities (Anmeldung)
It is mandatory (required) for all those with a residence in the Federal Republic of Germany to register their address with the local authorities. This includes international students. Further, you are required to register within one week of moving into your new home.
Registering with the authorities is easy, so do not worry. All you have to do is go to the Resident.s Registration Office (das Einwohnermeldeamt) with the following documentation and fill out a simple form.
Please take with you:
- Proof of your address (for ex. housing contract) in Germany
- Your passport
Get 100 Euro for registering! How?
New students in Gießen and Fulda, unfortunately not Friedberg, who register their German address as their primary residence receive 100 Euro as a welcome present. To qualify, you must take your confirmation of enrollment (die Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) with you when you register.
