EU-Citizens

As EU-citizens you are not required to apply for a residence permit. However, within 3 months of entry into Germany, you are required to fill in an EU- proof of residence upon entry form (die EU-Aufenthaltsanzeige).

As a student, you will need to present:

Proof of health insurance coverage (or exemption thereof)
Proof of sufficient funds
A valid passport

Your declaration of residence can be taken care of when you register your address with the city. Your form will be automatically forwarded to the appropriate Foreign Office and after a few weeks you will receive a confirmation of your right to reside in Germany.

All other Citizens

Within 3 months of your arrival, you must apply for a student residence permit on study purposes at the Aliens Department (die Ausländerbehörde).

Your residence permit is granted only for the purpose of studying at a university or institution of higher education, and is therefore limited in its validity.

When applying for your residence permit you will need to present:

A valid passport
1 ID-photo
Confirmation of registrating your address with the authorities (die Bestätigung Ihrer Anmeldung)
Your lease contract
Proof of health insurance
Your certificate of enrollment (die Studienbescheinigung)
Proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Germany
